Cover types

1) Early Magazine Covers - These early magazine covers were really different comparing to the ones nowadays. These were simpler having just publication data and a tittle instead of a table of contents. Then with the passed of the years started to add some new things such as illustrations.

2) The Poster Cover - The poster covers were illustrations that did not need description or any logo to explain it. They just says it all. They usually were not even related to the content in a magazine instead portrayed a season or general mood.

3) Pictures Married to Type - These were cover lines that  have an illustration of something and beside it a description of what the picture means. These had a combination of activities usually portraying a meaning about feelings.

4) In the Forest of Words - These contains cover lines a bit exaggerated since may of them were bigger than the tittle of the magazine. Also uses famous people or models to advertise its contents. These became very famous throughout the years because people bought them easily.

National Geographic, May 2011: "Above Yosemite"

The editors’ description of the cover : "Doing what they do may seem extreme enough, but to photograph Yosemite climbers, including Alex Honnold edging face-out along the Thank God Ledge on Half Dome (because ‘it's cooler that way’), is another whole ball of equipment. Photographer Jimmy Chin, who makes a living creating images of climbers all over the world, said: ‘At the end of the day, if I got one photo that I felt truly captured Yosemite climbing, that would make me happy.’ He got one—and it landed on the cover of National Geographicin May 2011."

This cover communicate a lot of things starting with the background also the light really helped the cover since you can clearly see the photo and what is in the background. The big brown rock behind the man and the mountains in the background makes the picture very interesting. The highness where the guy was amazed me. All these things communicated peace, freedom and love for the environment.

Magazine tips

1) Make it interesting and colorful.

2) Having a large size cover so people can see the main image.

3) Print out the cover as hard copy.

4) Emotionally irresistible.

5) Worth the investment of money and time.
